Description
The age of climate gradualism is over, as unprecedented disasters are exacerbated by inequalities of race and class. We need profound, radical change. A Green New Deal can tackle the climate emergency and rampant inequality at the same time. Cutting carbon emissions while winning immediate gains for the many is the only way to build a movement strong enough to defeat big oil, big business, and the super-rich--starting right now. A Planet to Win explores the political potential and concrete show more first steps of a Green New Deal. It calls for dismantling the fossil fuel industry and building beautiful landscapes of renewable energy, guaranteeing climate-friendly work and no-carbon housing and free public transit. And it shows how a Green New Deal in the United States can strengthen climate justice movements worldwide. We don't make politics under conditions of our own choosing, and no one would choose this crisis. But crises also present opportunities. We stand on the brink of disaster--but also at the cusp of wondrous, transformative change. show lessTags

A fairly short and easy to read justification for the Green New Deal, especially the less directly climate aspects that many feel overly encumber and obscure the prime goal of eliminating carbon emissions. This is a very timely book, one that couldn't have been written prior to 2018 and parts were already obsolete by late 2019. But with the 2024 elections already looming, and climate still the #1 issue on the ballot, it's still critical that everyone be informed on the issues and backs a planet-saving agenda.
The authors make no bones about their proposals requiring radical transformations, so even if you don't agree that we need to go quite that far, it's useful to understand the arguments and be able to evaluate alternate approaches.

Reads a bit like a manifesto of a perfect future. Gave me hope that things like this can happen, and I'd love to see even the basic ideas in this come to light, but who knows.
