This time Jack Ryan, Jr. is on vacation in Barcelona, Spain after trying to capture a member of the Iron Syndicate. He is in a cafe when he meets an old college friend, Renee Moore. As he leaves the cafe is blown up. Renee, whose last word is Sammler, and others perish. That sets him on a path to bring the bomber to justice. He works with Laia Brossa of the Spanish police to try to find Crooked Nose and identify who "Sorry Man" really was. These are the people of interest he saw when exiting the cafe. Meanwhile, back in Washington, President Ryan is dealing with the sinking of several cargo ships where ransom is asked of the cargo owners. Jack's hunt takes him back to the US, to Knoxville, Tennessee, and then to a yacht off the Mexican show more coast. This was a page-turner in spite of all the somewhat technical descriptions of quantum physics and technology. show less
This book, "Firing Point," was a mess. It may be due to my reading so many Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan's in a row. It may also be due to the number of books being written. I suspect if more time is taken, the books would be better. This was at the end of the book: "Thanks to what you and Gavin did, we avoided a global economic apocalypse, recovered the five trillion, and stopped a potential holocaust." Pretty impressive I guess, but it was comical even though I don't think it was suppose to be. Every book a female detective befriends the main character and then dies. I think that would be what gets talked about the most.

I picked this up as it was just added to overdrive. I haven't read this series aside from two junior novels. As a thriller it is a solid one. In Firing Point the bad guy was trying to ruin the global financial system, a good thriller with good action. It just hard to wrap my head around the fact that POTUS's son running around taking out bad guys.
Typical Tom Clancy fare. We have a great build-up, that seems to include several unrelated events, and they all come together in an ultimate triumph of good over evil. It is still rousing and compelling reading and was fun.
I think this was Mike's best effort by far since taking on Jack Jr.!!!
