"The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. She always did love the tale of Robin Hood. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain. She'll help Bacchus fix unruly spells around his estate if he doesn't turn her in. Working together, Elsie's trust in--and fondness for--the handsome stranger grows. So does her trepidation about the rise in the murders of wizards and the theft of the spellbooks their bodies leave behind. For a rogue spellbreaker like Elsie, there's so much to learn about her powers, her family, the intriguing Bacchus, and the untold dangers shadowing every step of a journey she's destined to complete. But will she uncover the mystery before it's too late to save everything she loves?"--Provided by publisher.… (more)

This book took me a while to get into. It was slow at the beginning. I almost gave up on it, but it got better around the one hundred page mark. I loved the dynamic between Elsie and Bacchus. That was definitely my favorite part. The explanation of the magic and world was a bit info dumpy at the beginning, so I didn’t really like that. And finally, I did not see that plot twist coming, but it definitely made the book better. Even though I gave this book a mediocre rating, I’ll still probably pick up the sequel so I can see what happens between Elsie and Bacchus mostly haha. ( )

Intersting magic concept in a kind of english victorian setting. The MC is can dismantle spells and does this in secret as she is not an approved spellbreaker.
A bit of a mystery kind of story.
Starting strong but couldn't keep the pace and when the novelty of the world was gone there was not enough new stuff to keep me interested. ( )

Duology set in an alternate world in Victorian England where magic is heavily regulated. A young woman uses her illegal magic to make life better for the poor and disadvantaged. A young man sails from Barbados to London to complete his training and master a specific spell. The two collide and fall into romance despite race and class differences. ( )
