Nothing particularly original here and a very heavy emphasis on sweets. I copied a couple of the savoury recipes (a riff on pizza cooked in coils, and a different way to caramelize onions for focaccia). However, I was disappointed in the lack of expertise of the author. Why does she not know there is a very good reason for iodized table salt? (Refer to the boxed comment on the Focaccia recipe).
In writing cookbooks for general publication, it is of paramount importance to stay in touch with developments in food safety ~ Gardner provided at least one recipe with uncooked flour (Billionaire Tart has uncooked cookie dough). Professional bakers have been cautioning against raw or under cooked dough for many years now. Classes in Food Science show more emphasize these health risks, too. While Gardner's light-hearted joking about 'procrasti-baking' made for an amusing approach to cooking, it would be foolish not to double-check her assertions in any recipe readers decide to try out. show less

A mildly interesting set of recipes. I have been known to bake instead of doing something I should be doing - but usually I just want to make something yummy and get on with it, rather than deliberately choosing something complicated to take extra time. The author keeps recommending that...or recommending using store-bought ingredients (canned biscuits, for example) to speed things up. The style is cute, including the little icons for faster, slower, down the rabbit hole... There are several (many) recipes I want to try at least once, and some may enter my repertoire. I'm less interested in the ones designed to take extra time...but Gardner does have a recipe for toffee cookies, including making the toffee, which is something I've been show more looking for for a long time. Glad I read it, now I have to go back to all my bookmarks and try the recipes. show less
This was such an entertaining cookbook. The recipes are really easy to understand and picture in your head. I love how it emphasizes taking your time to enjoy the baking process. I also appreciate the various substitution suggestions. I only wish there were more pictures throughout the book, because I love food pictures.
I originally purchased this book as a gift for my friend, who loves baking. However, after reading through all the recipes, I’ll have to add it to my own wishlist.
