Art dealer Oliver Cooper lives on the island of Mallorca until White, a Mafia hit man, turns up on the island demanding that he pay back a large sum of money he swindled from White's currently imprisoned boss. When Cooper disappears and his car is found abandoned, the tireless Inspector Alvarez is called in to investigate. To Alvarez's surprise, Cooper's body finally turns up in his own home- and it's plain that his death is neither suicide nor accident. On the trail for suspects, Alvarez discovers that Cooper's beautiful widow is having an affair, and that the dead man's peasant neighbour also had cause to hate Cooper. So while there is no shortage of people with a motive for murder, when it transpires that Cooper's watch smashed at the time of death it seems that they have alibis. But is the evidence to be believed…? Another delightful and witty novel featuring Roderic Jeffries' much-loved detective, the philosophical Inspector Alvarez. PRAISE FOR RODERIC JEFFRIES: 'Death Takes Time' "Jeffries wields a racy, complex plot, holding back a nifty terminal shock". 'Sunday Times' "This wholly delightful book is made even more attractive by the encounters between the superb Inspector Alvarez and a gallery of ghastly British expatriates". 'Scotsman' 'Too Clever By Half' "Roderic Jeffries' Inspector Alvarez continues to patrol his Balearic beat in his engaging and exasperated way". 'British Book News' "Jeffries has again produced a winner, combining intricate plotting and thoroughly agreeable characters".'Booklist' 'Death Trick' "The Mallorquin background is touched in with knowledge and affection; and Alvarez is a sympathetic and pleasant companion".'TLS' "High marks for detection, urbanity and narrative drive".'Irish Times'… (more)

In many ways this reminded me of Martin Walker's Bruno Chief of Police series set in France. Except that the Inspector Alvarez series is set in Mallorca. But the premise is similar: police detective embedded in his local community.

Every now and then in AN ARTISTIC WAY TO GO the reader is given tantalising glimpses of Alvarez' backstory, enough to encourage further dabbling in the series. The details about life in Mallorca have an authentic feel, a place that struggles to cope with the impact of tourism and the influx of new residents who threaten the old agricultural way of life.

There are plenty of suspects in the disappearance of British art dealer Oliver Cooper, even suicide and Alvarez narrows the list down methodically although in the long run he gets to the answer by intuition.

A fairly light, but enjoyable read. ( )
