Description
It is the summer of 1908, and the setting is a beautiful resort hotel on an island off the southern coast of Norway. A young forestry agent named Blinde becomes engaged to the charming Hilde Gjaernes. But the next day, he is found dead on a deserted stretch of the island. Detective Asbjorn Krag is summoned from Kristiana, the capital, to investigate, and he uncovers a tangle of jealousy, passion, long-hidden crimes, and murder. Krag also finds that he has another mystery to solve. A phantom show more wagon that leaves no tracks in the ground has haunted the island for years, and now it was heard again by people on the island at the time of Blinde's suspicious death. "...This is a classic Norwegian crime story. It was written over 100 years ago. Riverton is regarded as the founder of the modern Norwegian crime novel and he is a great writer. Somebody might think he is a bit slow and old-fashioned but I really like his style of writing. As a character himself he was very colourful and really lived the life that you would expect an author to live – sex, drugs and rock’n’roll, that kind of thing...."
