This is an informative and well-researched book loaded with scientific evidence that has convinced this reader to incorporate at last some of the suggested superfoods into her diet right away! In fact, green tea with basil leaves (and why not some licorice root and honey) is replacing my decaf coffee this evening. Some of La Fonceur’s superfoods are not at all surprising (extra virgin olive oil, flax seeds, spinach, barley…) receiving attention more regularly, but others are new to me (horse gram, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, Indian gooseberry) and may require some effort to track down as they are not readily available in more rural areas of the United States (and buying them fresh is encouraged). I appreciate the accessibility of the writing that is still scientifically sound and detailed and that specific mechanisms and body chemistry are explained (and not just glossed over). Contraindications are also included which is helpful as well. I think in light of how many people are affected by diabetes, hypertension and arthritis, this timely information is practical and I hope will improve and inform the diets and health of many people worldwide. In addition to learning about the individual superfoods, recipes are included which are helpful (especially if the food itself is new to a reader) and also ways to combine them depending on your particular health concerns. Due to its holistic, proactive and preventative approach I found the book helpful even though I do not have these particular health concerns (and now do hope to keep it that way!). The book also points out that although you should always be under a doctor’s care concerning prescribed medications, there are systematic and careful ways you can work with your doctor to slowly replace medications through a thoughtful diet, and even avoid having to be on medications in the future. This is a positive and resourceful book that I will refer to often and recommend to others struggling with obesity, diabetes and/or arthritis.
