3031 Cardinal Consalvi 1757-1824, by John Martin Robinson (read 7 Nov 1997) This 1987 biography of Cardinal Consalvi is the only biography of him, the author says. He was Pope Pius VII's Secretary of State and a very able one. I thought the book very well done and a joy to read. One is bothered by the ready use of capital punishment in the Papal States, but it was another age. The book is sympathetic and portrays Consalvi in a good light. He was ordained a deacon when he was made a Cardinal, but was never a priest.
