I read it slowly for me, because of how it's structured, but that's not a bad thing. Joel is justifiably a mess. Chloe is like a puzzle box, hard to figure out. All the other characters have dark pasts, except maybe the Detective. It's dual-POV, although other characters get a scene here & there. I enjoyed every character. I am a big fan of found family. The author's style is a little odd, but the plot is good, neatly dovetailing into the continuing series, heavily reliant on all these unique characters as is necessary in a good mystery/suspense. I saw one reviewer call this a cliffhanger, but it is no such thing. It's a romance, and that's how it ends. It includes a excerpt from book 2 to lure you into continuing the series--as any first book should do. Book 2 isn't out yet. I'm not sure I'll read it, but I will at least read the excerpt when it is available. CW: lots of trauma among the characters (expected in murder mysteries, but still) no reviews | add a review

This was an enjoyable romantic suspense read. The plot was decently complex and kept me invested in finding out who the killer was and discovering all of Chloe's secrets. The romance between Chloe and Joel was typical of the genre - instant attraction and lacking in emotional development but it was alright. I did like that it wasn't exactly instalove - they both were attracted but didn't quite jump into the deep end until they were further along.
Chloe was a bit robotic at the start but it was honestly what I liked most about her. The way she managed to separate herself from her emotions and be more analytical was a draw. I like Joel well enough. The rest of the characters were great. I loved how Chloe had built this little family up around her - her brother, Reece, her rescued assassin, Marie, the coroner, Reuben and the police detective, Cedric Coleman.
Another solid romantic suspense with a darker edge from Cynthia Eden. 4 stars. ( )
