Description

First published in 1937, The Seven Who Fled achieved brilliant success in America and Europe. It is the story of seven Europeans--six men and one woman--who are forced to flee the Asian town where they have settled. Their travels through the deserts of Tibet, Mongolia and China take them to the edge of civilization, and force them to recognize a spiritual emptiness that gradually yields to new pressures of instinct and survival.

Seven Europeans, caught in Central Asia, set out on a dangerous overland journey fleeing war and disease. They are separated and the story follows each of them to their separate (and mostly unpleasant) fates. The author writes beautifully and the descriptions of Asia are fine, but there isn't a likeable character in the book.
