2022 recipient of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award

Love this whimsical early reader! The repetitiveness and cute illustrations will carry the reader along as fox explores the night, despite the monsters. Tabor uses senses to immerse reader in the action as fox meets new friends.
Great choice for a beginning independent reader. ( )

Fox is scared of camping alone at night because monsters are all around, but friendly nocturnal animals aim to show him otherwise.

This book starts out with a good premise of facing one’s fears and seeing how rational explanations exist for what is seemingly scary. However, the twist ending with a real monster completely negates the entirety of that. I don’t think that’s a great message for the young children who are the target audience for this book. The illustrations are super cute, but that doesn’t make up for the subpar plot. ( )

First sentence: It is night, and Fox is scared. "The night is full of monsters," says Fox. Fox looks for monsters.

Premise/plot: Will Fox find monsters when he looks for them? Or will he find new friends?

My thoughts: This one does not feature the usual cast of characters in the Fox books. (Likely they are all asleep.) It was cute and fun. I enjoyed the funny twist ending. ( )

An excellent choice for the Geisel Award. This book is PERFECT for beginning readers. So many sight words with enough repetition to teach but not enough to bore adults. ( )

This book would be for Primary level aged students. This book is about the friendship of a fox and a bat. Throughout the book they travel through the night discovering the stars, monsters, planets, and other nightly friends. This book would be good to use in the classroom for early readers just discovering how to read a story. ( )
