Perfect for fans of Alice Hoffman, Isabel Allende, and Sarah Addison Allen, a family searches for the truth hidden in their past in this "expertly woven tale of family power, threaded with as much mystery as magic" (V.E. Schwab, #1 New York Times bestselling author).
The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low, or why their matriarch won't ever leave their home in Four Rivers??not for graduations, weddings, or baptisms. But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orquídea is transformed into a ceiba tree, leaving them with more questions than answers.

Seven years later, her gifts have manifested in different ways for Marimar, Rey, and Rhiannon, granting them unexpected blessings and powers. But soon, a hidden figure begins to tear through their family tree, picking them off one by one as it seeks to destroy Orquídea's line. Determined to save what's left of their family and uncover the truth behind their inheritance, her descendants travel to Ecuador??to the place where Orquídea buried her secrets and broken promises and never looked back.

Alternating between Orquídea's past and her descendants' present, The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina is a "spellbinding tale, both timeless and fresh, that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. Prepare to fall in love" (Kim Liggett, New York Times

2.25 stars. there was a little too much going on here and too many characters for me to easily keep track of (maybe i would have done better reading rather than listening to this one). some of the fantastical elements were easier for me than others but this was a nice sprinkling of fantasy mixed in, versus being overwhelmed by the fantasy. i'm trying to expand my ability to read fantasy and this was a good choice, even as i didn't love it. 4.5 but heartily and happily rounding up! "The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina" is a deeply unique story that very truly has no equal. Córdova tells a magical, multigenerational tale that just begs the reader to keep going deeper into the strangeness and wonder of the Montoya family. I read this over a couple weeks to savor it, but part of me just wanted to rush through the whole thing to find out what was happening!

The biggest weakness is that the climax/final explanations happen very very quickly and at the 11th hour, however that doesn't take away from the beauty of the rest of the book. Lastly, there is a HUGE sort of infodump near the beginning where the reader is introduced to the extended family very quickly and it's admittedly a bit overwhelming. I would say just check the family tree at the start of the book if you're not sure who is who at first, but honestly (like with any other large cast book) it gets easier as the book progresses.

If you're a fan of magic realism, multiple POVs, family stories, and a tad of otherworldliness, this should be your next read! ( )

Too many characters, I just wanted a story not eight different stories. Maybe another time I could read this.

The book started strong, and I liked Orquidea's character, particularly in the flashbacks. It felt like it started to lose cohesion in its world and story, particularly the last 3rd. SciFi elements? ( )

I struggled to pay attention while listening to this book. Many times I found myself having phased out during minutes worth of content. I guess I didn't find it compelling.

Epigraph
Yo quiero luz de luna

para mi noche triste,

para sentir divina

la ilusión que me trajiste,

para sentirte mía, mía tú

como ninguna,

pues desde que te fuiste

no he tenido luz de luna.
