"#1 New York Times bestselling author W. Bruce Cameron once again captures the bravery and determination of a very good dog in the gripping sequel to A Dog's Way Home, the acclaimed novel that inspired the hit movie! Bella was once a lost dog, but now she lives happily with her people, Lucas and Olivia, only occasionally recalling the hardships in her past. Then a weekend camping trip turns into a harrowing struggle for survival when the Rocky Mountains are engulfed by the biggest wildfire in American history. The raging inferno separates Bella from her people and she is lost once more. Alone in the wilderness, Bella unexpectedly finds herself responsible for the safety of two defenseless mountain lion cubs. Now she's torn between two equally urgent goals. More than anything, she wants to find her way home to Lucas and Olivia, but not if it means abandoning her new family to danger. And danger abounds, from predators hunting them to the flames threatening at every turn. Can Bella ever get back to where she truly belongs? A Dog's Courage is a moving tale of loyalty and the constant heart of one devoted dog - brought vividly to life with a keen understanding of what makes all dogs so special"--… (more)

I have read almost all of this author's books and loved most of them. I wanted to love this one, too, but it didn't quite work for me.

For me, the book started with Bella's journey. Unfortunately, that was exactly at the half-way point. I know I was supposed to care about the fire and Lucus and Olivia, but I just didn't. Not really.

The book definitely picked up with Bella's journey and for that I give it 3 stars. The first half of the book isn't worth much at all, unfortunately. ( )

A really enjoyable read!
No longer a lost dog, Bella is living with Lucas & Olivia again. But a weekend camping trip soon turns into a disturblingly nerve- wracking fight for survival as bush fires consume the Rocky Mountains. Separated from her people, she miraculously finds Big Kitten again & umwittingly becomes a surrogate mother to her two kittens when Big Kitten goes missing. Bella desparately wants to make her way back to Olivia & Lucas but not if it means abandoning her new family...
I mostly enjoyed this story but the story line cut a bit too close to 'A Dogs Way Home' at times & seemed a bit repetitive in places. Olivia's 'save the animals' rhetoric also got a bit old after a while. I mean, yeah, I'm a vege & I'm really not a fan of animal cruelty or neglect. But as much as it sucks, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet & get the job done.
Anyway, apart from that, the story was good & one thing I always love abotu W Bruce Cameron's books is his 'dog observations' eg, 'Humans often seemed driven by purposes that a dog cannot understand' or just bald- faced truth, eg, 'I supposed I would still love him either way, but it was much easier to love him when he didn't stink'
If you love animal stories & need a laugh or an exciting read (& you haven't read the first book in the series) this book is for you.

Cameron's books are heart warming to read because he does such a good job of making you, the reader, feel as though you are seeing the world through the dog's eyes. This particular book was a page turner with the fire experiences and I'm amazed at how much detail he was able to provide. ( )
