3690. the Battle of Waterloo, by Victor Hugo (read 30 Jan 2003) The edition I read was published in 1907, and is only 107 pages. But it is written clearly and with flair, and is enhanced by an account of the author's visit to the field of battle in 1861. It is full of interesting comments like "if the little shepherd who served as guide to Bulow, Blucher's lieutenant, had advised him to debouch from the forest above Frischemont, instead of below Plancement, the form of the 19th century would have been different, for Napoleon would have won the battle of Waterloo." History by a master, written as it should be.
