Berserk, Volume 27

Volume starts with very point-of-no-return story. As our heroes go back to the enchanted forest where good witch lives, they find themselves confronted with the Griffith's Apostles, led by Zodd. This is very emotional story, especially for our Schierke, you can just feel the burden that she suddenly finds on her shoulders.

And for Guts, well for him nothing is simple nor easy. But here he will be given a gift, a gift that might be something to save his life, but also condemn him to fate worst than death.

Second story in this novel is story of Kushan invasion force and their Emperor, Ganishka. Now this guy is very, very disturbing. Story first serves the purpose to show how Windham is slowly turned to demonically possessed place, with show more various deadly creatures crawling under the protection of fog. Nobody is safe and bodies cover the entire area (some of the ways how bodies are mixed up with the sculptures in city halls and city squares are W40K to the core). Scenes of the place where demons are brought to life are as nightmarish as they can get.

Second purpose is to establish the relation between Griffith and his new army of monsters and Kushan Emperor. Windham and surroundings slowly are becoming the battlefield of the hellish armies that have broken through the veil and started terrorizing the world.

This is the 27th volume in the Berserk series. The book starts off with Guts fighting Zodd the Immortal who has turned into a sort of crystal dragon. Guts is in his new Berserker Armor which is as helpful as it is punishing. However, once the Armor takes hold Guts is trapped inside it and requires Schierke’s assistance to break free.

Meanwhile back in Windham we get to watch as Griffith’s forces take on the Kushan Emperor, Ganishka. Princess Charlotte is being held by Ganishka as well and it is interesting to see what she has been up to.

We meet a whole bunch of new characters (or at least characters we only saw once or twice before and haven’t seen for awhile) in the part of the manga that takes place in Windham. I actually found show more this part to be a bit confusing and didn’t enjoy it as much as the parts with Guts. Because of this I didn’t enjoy this volume quite as much as previous ones.

The illustration remains amazing but I am unsure about this whole Griffith versus the Kushan part of the story.

Overall this was a good continuation of the Berserk series. I am eager to see what happens in the next volume and would recommend to mature fans of horror fantasy manga. show less
