Fireborn

I don't read middle-grade literature often, but this one stands out and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Fireborn is a fast-paced, thrilling fantastical adventure that follows Twelve, our young heroine, who has given up everything to become a hunter. The story comes with a unique magic system and exciting world-building. We get to explore hierarchies and see the characters put their differences aside and work together, which isn't easy.
Twelve stands out from other middle-grade novel heroine and I often resonated with her. She's inspiring for any young reader. She's flawed and brave and a real badass. I think young readers will enjoy her snarky humor and banter. All the characters are charismatic, including the squirel. Widge show more and Dog were fabulous sidekicks and added loads of humour to the story thus balancing the darker themes.

I loved the plot twists at the end and I recommend Fireborn to all fantasy lovers. Although this is technically middle-grade it reads a lot like a YA fantasy.

Twelve went through something so tragic that she was left completely alone. She made her way to the Hunting Lodge to become a Hunter because what else was there for her to do? Once there and accepted she has to give up her name and her identity to become only Twelve. If she can survive her blooding then she may chose a name and go from huntling to Hunter. But that’s not what she’s there for. Twelve wants to learn everything she can so she can exact revenge on those who took everything from her. When the Lodge is attacked, something unheard of, all of her plans start to crumble. Will she firm up her plans or adapt to her new situation?

Twelve is an interesting character. There is tragedy in her past and something show more else. She is determined and focused, but at what expense? She has no friends and even though she says she doesn’t want or need any, everyone needs at least one person they can count on. Her training helps considerably when she ventures out beyond the Hunting Lodge, but she has so much to learn. Enter her traveling companions…

Twelve knows intellectually that she’s not the only person to suffer, but everyone who joins the Hunting Lodge has to leave their identity behind. They pledge themselves to the Lodge and ALL the peoples of the land, not just their own clans. So, they aren’t allowed to talk about their pasts. Not even what their names once were or why they ended up at the Lodge. But she’s so focused on her own agenda she forgets that she’s not the only one with a tragic past. As she finds out during her travels with her unexpected companions.

I don’t want to give away details of their journey, it’s reason, or who her companions are, I just want to say that it’s a learning experience for them all. Each and every one of them. And, for the reader, too as we discover secrets and more secrets along the way. Some questions are answered and some things are put right, but at the end of Fireborn, we know the story is just beginning.

If you have an appetite for Middle Grade Fantasy filled with danger, a journey, and learning opportunities then Fireborn is a satisfying and tasty treat. show less

Ich habe dieses Buch sehr genossen. Zwölf war ein sehr interessanter Charakter, die Welt war ziemlich cool und der Schreibstil gut.

Die Mission an sich war faszinierend, die Hürden nicht unrealistisch und der Endkampf sehr spanned. Insgesamt also einfach 10 von 10.

Was willst du für ein Mensch sein?
Eine Frage die sich durch das gesamte Buch zieht und schließlich beweist, dass man selbst entscheiden kann welchen Weg man beschreitet.

Feuerblut ist ein tolles Buch, das mich ab der ersten Seite von sich überzeugt hat. Zwar ist es zu Anfang manchmal komisch, wenn Charaktere seltsame Namen haben, aber tatsächlich ergibt es Sinn, dass die Jagdlinge zahlen als Namen nutzen und sich später ihren Namen aussuchen können. Insgesamt sind die Namen der Figuren natürlich auch davon unabhängig ungewöhnlich, dadurch aber nicht weniger gut oder schön. Man gewöhnt sich beim Lesen sehr schnell daran. Eigentlich bin ich tatsächlich nie darüber gestolpert und hatte von Beginn an das Gefühl, dass die Namen show more einfach passen. Der Schreibstil ist insgesamt so angenehm, dass es einem furchtbar leicht gemacht wird durch die Seiten zu fliegen und solche Dinge zu akzeptieren. Wenn man Zwölfs richtigen Namen erfährt, fühlte dieser sich tatsächlich nichtmal mehr passend an, jedenfalls war das mein Eindruck.

Nicht zuletzt ist die Geschichte einfach spannend und ein tolles Abenteuer um junge Leute, die sich eigentlich gar nicht mögen, oder mögen wollen, aber der Umstände wegen zusammenwachsen und sich entwickeln. Es ist ein Buch, das deutlich mehr rüberbringt, als nur die Geschichte selbst. Es zeigt auch nicht nur, wie anfangs erwähnt, dass man entscheiden kann welche Wege man einschlägt, sondern auch, dass nicht immer alles so ist, wie man denkt und wie viel Schaden Vorurteile eigentlich anrichten können. Ich denke es kann durchaus dazu anregen manches zu überdenken, gerade weil man hier sehr genau sieht, wie ungerecht und ungerechtfertigt Vorurteile sein können und sind; dass man nicht alle Menschen über einen Kamm scheren kann und man andere nicht für die Taten dritter verantwortlich machen kann.

Feuerblut ist ein Buch, welches ich empfehlen kann und das mir viel Freude gemacht hat. Es gibt sogar Wesen, die ich teilweise noch nirgends so 'gelesen' habe, die ich mir aber trotzdem sehr gut vorstellen konnte. Überhaupt gibt es einige faszinierende Begebenheiten in diesem Buch und ich bin schon wahnsinnig gespannt auf das nächste Abenteuer in dieser Welt! show less
