Two longish short stories by Norway's Nobel winning author.
The Bridal March follows Mildrid and Hans who meet out in the countryside while he is hunting a bear, and fall madly in love. But Mildrid's mother has unhappy connotations with weddings - she nearly didn't go through with her own - and can't even bear to hear the Bridal March played...
One Day is about the end of a dream. When pretty young Ella hears singer Aksel Aaro perform, she is moved to tears, and thinks he is singing for her. But she ends up marrying another, who turns out to be a nasty piece of work: 'he would break the neck of her conditions like a shrimp'. When Aaro returns and invites her out, she begins a truly magical day - even finding the first dandelions of the show more year fills her with delight of what is to come. But life doesn't always live up to expectations...
Not a particularly enthralling read. show less

Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was the consummate idealist, crusading for noble causes all over Europe, but maintaining his sympathy for human failings. Bjørnson's tales of country life were a romantic attempt to capture the Norwegian national character in literature. They were vastly popular in the United States among homesick Norwegian immigrants. show more When the Modern Breakthrough arrived, Bjørnson began energetically composing plays of social relevance. Although less widely read today, Bjørnson remains a significant figure in Norwegian literary history. Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. Bjørnson died in 1910.
