I thought this was a good book: well documented, well written. I have read other books by Herwig and have enjoyed them all. One comment is that if you have read a great deal on the subject of WWI Germany and the Austro-Hungarian empire you will find not much new stuff. However, you will find a gread deal more depth on topics of which you are familiar. For that reason I recommend this book. Particularly if you are do not have read widely on Germany and Austria-Hungary during WWI. In this case you will learn a great deal.

For a student of the great war a must read.
3727. The First World War: Germany and Austria-Hungary 1914-1918, by Holger H. Herwig (read 8 Apr 2003) This is a 1996 book, telling of the war from the other side and based on mostly German and Austrian sources. The author, while born and partially educated in Germany, is now a Canadian citizen. If you as I have suffered thru World War One histories heavy with bad news for all the time up to August 1918 this is a pleasanter book since it shows how dire things were for the other side during the time our side was so close to despair.
