Piper is a lich-doctor, a physician who works among the dead, determining causes of death for the city guard's investigations. It's a peaceful, if solitary profession...until the day when he's called to the river to examine the latest in a series of mysterious bodies, mangled by some unknown force.

Galen is a paladin of a dead god, lost to holiness and no longer entirely sane. He has long since given up on any hope of love. But when the two men and a brave gnole constable are drawn into the web of the mysterious killer, it's Galen's job to protect Piper from the traps that await them.

He's just not sure if he can protect Piper from the most dangerous threat of all...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! ( )

I've enjoyed the gnoles and their culture in this series, but overall I think Kingfisher's writing just isn't for me. If this aligned with my humor I think it might have been more fun, but for me the jokes just fell kinda flat. Like someone trying really hard to come off as adorable, but repeatedly failing. I liked the first book in this world, Clockwork Boys, but otherwise most of the drawbacks in this book have appeared in the others, and overall the good doesn't outweigh the bad for me. I can see it being kind of a fun adventure if this lined up better with your interests and humor though. ( )

Bad Decisions Book Club Book. I really shouldn't just read these without having a lot of time to finish because starting it late at night is a bad decision. I was pulled in and could hardly put it down.
Galen is one of the Paladins of a dead god and sometimes he loses it and goes berserk; it's not good for him or anyone near him. Piper is a Lich Doctor who is basically the Coroner for the area and he's good at his job, not so good with people. The third party in this is Earstripe the Gnole who regularly steals scenes he's in. There are murders and a investigation and an awful lot of yearning between Galen and Piper. ( )

Kingfisher, T. Paladin’s Hope. Red Wombat Studio, 2021. Saint of Steel 3.
Here is the apparent recipe for a Saint of Steel novel. Take one broken-hearted berserker paladin whose god has died. Add one serial killer with powerful magic. Add one love interest with minor magic power. Add a gnoll or two who speak of themselves in the third person. Place in a maze and stir to a boil. Always tasty. 4 stars. ( )

It figures that when T. Kingfisher writes a romance series (and The Saint of Steel is absolutely a romance series) that it would involve lich doctors with mysterious powers, a deadly labyrinth, paladins of dead god and some really delightful gnolls. Wouldn't have it any other way. Love that this installment has even more gnoll culture, gay protagonists, returning characters from previous books and an aaaaaaargh cliffhanger ending. Love these as audio books, too -- the reader is excellent. ( )
