When Gritch the Witch wakes up one day, she is simply famished, and only Piggie Pie will do! Unfortunately, she has no little pink piggies on hand. Turning (naturally) to the yellow pages, Gritch discovers a listing for Old MacDonald's Farm, and sets off immediately. But her eager "declaration of war" - she writes "Surrender Piggies!" in the sky with her broom - alerts her porcine prey, who turn out to be a little too clever for her...

Piggie Pie! is the second book by Margie Palatini that I have tried, following upon her Aesopic adaptation, Lousy Rotten Stinkin' Grapes, and it confirms my initial impression that here is a picture-book author whose sense of humor I can really appreciate! With an exuberantly villainous witch - brilliantly show more depicted in Howard Fine's pastel illustrations - an amusing turning of the tables by some very smart pigs, and a rather sharp ending involving a Wolf, there is much here to entertain the young reader/listener. The refrain - a reworking of the traditional children's song, Old MacDonald - makes this one an excellent read-aloud selection! show less
This is one of my all time favorite children's books. I purchased this and the sequel, Zoom Broom, many years ago - late 90's. Over the years, Piggie Pie lost a page or two, and Zoom Broom just disappeared, however, I pretty much had memorized Piggie Pie. This was also my two kids' favorite books to have read allowed, even as young adults. One day, my then 18 year old daughter, asked me to read to her. I was caught off guard - but after reading a few stories from Hans Christian Anderson, she didn't seem satisfied. Suddenly she ran upstairs to her old room, and ran back down with Piggie Pie. I was slightly bemused. She said - "...and you have to read it with the different voices!" As I was reading it, I suddenly heard my then 21 year old show more son running down the stairs, excited - jumped on the couch next us, and listened intently, as I read - with a smile on his face. I am ordering some used copies, because my personal library will never be complete with out them. I am also ordering the 3rd book in the series - Broom Mates - hoping it will be just as delightful. show less
Cleverly disguised pigs impersonate ducks, chickens, a cow, and Old MacDonald himself, as this uproarious, quick-paced story builds to an ironically surprising conclusion. Wacky, hip, and illustrated with bold, bright paintings, Piggie Pie adds a new twist to an old fairy-tale scene.
A wonderful story of trickery with engaging graphics. The most important thing is this book needs to be read aloud, especially if you are not shy about doing the various characters in different voices. The older the children get, the more they will pick up on the subtleties in the jokes. It will be fun!
"Piggie Pie!" is a book that will have young students screeching with laughter. This book combines fantasy with farm animals and tells of the hilarious antics of Gritch, an angry (and hungry!) old witch who will stop at nothing to find a pig for her favorite dish - piggie pie. The pigs on the farm Gritch visits evade her attempts to capture them through trickery, disguise, and wit. This text is could be a favorite of both boys and girls in a classroom, and can teach great lessons in paying attention to your surroundings and provide an introduction to what irony is and how it functions in literature.
"Gritch the witch woke up grouchy, grumpy, and very hungry. Her belly grumbled for something special." PIGGIE PIE! And so begins this cleverly written, full of pun fun adventure enlivened even further by hilarious illustrations created by Howard Fine. My personal favorite nod to witches who came before is the "Surrender Piggies" skywriting done by Gritch over Old MacDonald's farm. Young ones will enjoy this frolic through fractured fairy tale land and will be giggling with delight when they spot the ingeniously disguised piggies in the pictures.
I really like this book because of it's fun and humorous atmosphere. I used to read this book all the time as a kid and loved it. In the story, there's a with that is really craving some piggie pie. In order to make her famous piggie pie, she needs some pigs. She goes to a farm to get some and all of the pigs know she is trying to eat them so they dress up as other animals in order to disguise themselves. The witch gets super frustrated which is what makes the story so comical. This fun book has excellent illustrations with contrasting font sizes that make the text so appealing to readers. I didn't really find a true moral of the story, but I found it to be an enjoyable and fun read.
I really loved this book! The first aspect of this book I noticed what the descriptive language the author uses! The vibrant water colored illustrations are close up and full of detail which really enhance the text and bring the book to life! The illustrator exaggerates the imagery of Gritch’s long nose, chin, and green fingernails. The rhyming text is flowing and keeps readers engaged. I laughed out loud numerous times while reading this book. It's truly a funny story, and I love how the author brought in Old MacDonald, the three little pigs, and the big bad wolf! I would say the main message of this book is perseverance; the witch never truly gave up! She settled for the wolf!
