An attempt to flesh out McCoy's character, giving him a history in Starfleet before the Enterprise and a daughter he didn't know he had (maybe), plus a rival-cum-best-friend. Overall I found the ideas more intriguing than the execution, but it was perfectly serviceable.
A well-written Star Trek book about a former best friend from McCoy's past, later a rival. The ambassador accompanies the Enterprise to Empyrea, an isolationist world of genetically engineered perfect humans, where McCoy is told about a daughter he never knew he had. The penalty for her less-than-perfect genes would be death or expulsion, unless McCoy can think of a way out. A pretty good one, highlighting Bones' well-documented inferiority complex.
