The fact it took me more than 2 weeks to finish is indicative that the plot or characters didn't engage me. There seemed to be a lot of padding around the plot and the lead character, Jack Warr wasn't very sympathetic. ( ) Book 3 in the DC Jack Warr series, DC Jack already has his sights on Avril's murderer and tries all he can to track him down and seek justice. On some occasions, a character's dialogue is kept in the same paragraph as another character's dialogue, so without context, it's difficult to see who is actually talking. And even when it's the same character talking, the dialogue will start in the next paragraph due to the change of action. The speech marks are also used for titles so at times not distinguished from the actual dialogue that follows. The book is overall confusing to read. This story is heavy and a slow burn, constantly establishing the setting and the time of day instead of moving with the plot. The book is ideal for those interested in police procedure and the behind the scenes of the investigation. The best part is the final quarter of the story and the twist is gripping. A 5 Star ***** read in Ms. LaPlante’s Jack Warr series. Gripping, tense, hard to put down; a brilliant detective story and police procedural. When an eccentric (that’s putting it mildly) elderly widow reports multiple times that she is being stalked, Detective Jack Warr seems to be the only person willing to investigate her claims. Ms. LaPlante never lets me down. Her books, her screenplays - all are top-notch. no reviews | add a review
