The book combines dreams and fantasy and reality. Only Bax has the responsibility to distinguish the three. The one consistency is the ring he receives from a homeless man outside his home. With his friends, Bax attempts to remove Ilfrit, an entity he summons unintentionally, and readers are thrown into a mystery narrative. While capitalised dialogue can feel engaging, it's personally distracting. This is a young adult read with dark twists and interesting turns throughout the story.

From Brick & Darkness was a dark coming of age story that takes the reader on a fantastic adventure. Bax is a teenage boy who learns the hard way to be careful what you wish for. Baxter Jason and Ashley were fun characters to follow along with. They had great chemistry and were easy to like and relate to. With some fun twists, a fast pace and a plot that is both entertaining and captivating From Brick & Darkness is a great read!

What would you wish for if you had a genie?

Thank you R&R Book Tours and J.L. Sullivan for sharing this great adventure with me!

Poor Bax, he should have known that nothing good comes from making wishes with a djinn. They are sneaky and evil beings. Well, Bax did discover this later in the story but by then so many things had gone wrong. While the havoc that Ifrit caused towards Bax and his friends did get bigger, there was still a tone about the overall story that kept it from being too dark or scary. This is because the book appears to be marketed for the 13-18 age range.

So, in regard to the book, it is marketed correctly as there is nothing too scary that the targeted reading audience could not handle. In fact, I think that this age group would be able to relate to Bax and his friends. Yet as someone who is older, I could not connect as strongly and wanted a scarier read. Although, I did still like this book and would read another by this author. ( )
