This excellent work, with more than 800 photos for ease of use, is designed to help students get the most out of the study and training of the five essential Pin'an kata. Tomiyama Sensei, one of the leading shito ryu instructors in the world, not only demonstrates the katas, advising on performance and underlying principles, but also brings together sets of 'bunkai' (applications) to aid understanding of the content. It is through the practice of Pin'an katas and the many and varied applications that practitioners at all levels get a solid foiundation for a meaningful study of the art of karate. This comprehensive work is an indispensable tool for students and teachers alike.

Keiji Tomiyama is one of the icons of Japnese karate. A direct student of Founder Chojiro Tani, Mr. Tomiyama was chosen by Master Tani to spread the art according to the ethical and moral principles of the old Japanese traditions. Described as a teacher who gives as much as he demands, Mr. Tomiyama continues his dedicated task of spreading the message of his teacher around the world and living by the same Budo principles that fostered the spirits of the ancient warriors of Japan.
