Description

Taking readers into the heart of African genocide, Koigi wa Wamwere confronts the sheer terror of ethnic cleansing and Africa. Himself a veteran of decades of ethnic violence in Kenya, he both describes what he has seen, and recounts the stories of horror that others have told him in places such as Rwanda, Sudan, Liberia, Nigeria, Algeria, Uganda, Burundi, Angola, Somalia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Never has this problem been explained - and denounced - with such show more insider's detail, offering a crucial first step toward an international solution. show less

Negative Ethnicity is an account of ethnic rivalries in Africa and how they undermine any attempts at democracy. Wamwere details how negative ethnicity was first used as a tactic by imperialists to keep Africans from fighting for their independence, and how it is now used by elites to uphold a system of capitalism where small numbers of people reap the benefits of Africa's natural resources. The book is mostly centered on Kenya but also includes information from other African countries.
