Portis is a genius of simplicity (see also: Not A Box; Not A Stick; Hey, Water!). This cyclical story tells of a seed falling, taking root, growing, budding (with a fold-up page, for a big wow factor at storytime), flowering, and dropping seeds to begin it all again.

Back matter includes parts of a sunflower seed, what the seed needs to sprout, parts of a sunflower plant, life cycle of a sunflower plant, and "more to explore" (sources, mostly books but one website). Sunflower-seed patterned endpapers are a delight.
This book is great for students at a beginner level. This book showcases the life of a sunflower and how it grows over time. It is filled with beautiful illustrations that explain the science of plant life. I would introduce this book to my classroom during a science unit for younger elementary students to learn about how plant life works!
This is an excellent text for beginning readers due to the simple text and the large font size. My older audience loved talking about the life cycle of a plant and my younger kiddos loved the sunflowers.
Book for primary students. This book goes through the life of a sunflower. It has some good information in it about how sunflowers grow over time. I would use this for a science class on plants for kindergarten through maybe second grade.
1. I would recommend this book in a preschool setting.
2.This book is an informational book with cute illustrations of how a plant grows from seed to flower to reseeding.
3.I would definitely have this in my future classroom if I am a lower elementary teacher. It is informational and has great illustrations.
Simple text and bold graphics show the life cycle of a sunflower plant. Backmatter expands on the facts and gives further reading suggestions.
So many books are avl. on this topic. Some might find this special because of the gimmick fold-out page. Parents and other educators are invited to explore the back matter. But imo it's just not necessary.
