The Penguin Dictionary of Modern History, 1789-1945 (Penguin Reference Books)

I resorted to this work again and again when majoring in History at Princeton (BA 1974), but little of its instruction served to deepen my understanding of history. Palmer compiled it while teaching at Highgate School, London, where he taught for 19 years before becoming a full-time writer. Reliable enough in its details, his Dictionary of Modern History is lacking in any sort of vision. This is no doubt a virtue in its author's eyes. Palmer said his goal was "to summarize the interpretations of historical events that are accepted in the year 1960." From that point of view the volume has a period interest. A.W. Palmer has no connection to the better-known (in the U.S.) historian R.R. Palmer (1909-2002).
