I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. As a former teacher-librarian and current Kindergarten teacher, teaching young children about different holidays and traditions, I have often looked for books that were about Mardi Gras and I have too often come up empty handed. Most titles focused on Carnival in Rio, if I found anything at all. Madison Webb's book hit all the criteria I had set for a book I could use in my classroom. Let me start with the artwork by Melissa Moore which is exceptionally vibrant and fitting. Each page could easily be framed as a unique piece of art. Webb also manages to fit an alternate rhyming scheme into the work which is delightful (e.g. preen/scene and NOLA politics/mix ) for young learners to hear and adults to read. Having traveled to New Orleans a few times, I recognize the accuracy and the joy depicted in the work: everything from Flambeaux lighting their torches to serving King Cake and riding the St. Charles streetcar. This book is highly recommended. ( )This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Loved the bright colors and history of this book. One of my classroom's favorites! This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. The colors and energy in this lovely picture book grab the reader right from the cover. It would be best as a read-along so grownups can define terms and explain the celebration. The book has a simple, rhyming text that informs while entertaining. Young readers will love the vibrant images on each page while being introduced to the city of New Orleans. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Fun read with exquisite illustrations!
The publisher's blurb is better than what I could say except for that I absolutely LOVE this book! The prose is simple and fun in a rhyming way.The illustrations by Mellissa Moore are brilliant, imaginative, colorful, and notably perfect. Only the covers are sprinkled with contained glitter (no mess). Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and appropriate for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or teacher or your public library. I received free copy of the book from a LibraryThing Giveaway offered by Susan Schadt Press. I have since donated it to my local library after the grands read it. This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book offers children insight into a holiday rich with culture and history. Where I am from, Mardi Gras isn't celebrated, nor is it spoken about that often. This beautifully illustrated book taught me information about the holiday and left me wanting to know more.no reviews | add a review
