Description
Recovering from the recent death of his wife in a cliff fall, Tony Sheridan goes to stay with her sister and her husband at their house in Rutland. The house, called Otherways, is in some senses a character in the story: a strange, circular, moted construction dating from Edwardian times. Disturbed by memories of his wife and a growing attraction to her sister, and troubled by vivid dreams, Sheridan learns that a murder committed at the house in 1939 still has resonances for those living in show more the neighbourhood, including the sister of the murdered woman. There is a scandal surrounding the murderer's brother, and enough hints of other mysteries to forewarn Sheridan of impending disaster as he embarks on a secret affair. But that disaster is far worse than a friendship betrayed. Its nature is revealed by the ghosts that have haunted Otherways over the years - of whom he comes to fear that he may be one himself. show lessTags

Ok...the second she hit him should be his clue to get the fuck away. But it's a Goddard novel so he won't and things will go from bad to worse. Oy. Too many dream sequences...oh how I loathe dream sequences.
This was another interesting read from Goddard. At times I found some of the main characters actions and behaviour unconvincing, but perhaps that was because I was looking for the explanations of the parallels between those living at Otherways through the years to be more extensive. Nonetheless it had me turning pages and was more satisfying than Out of the Blue. Goddard is good at building tension and describing the atmosphere in places.
Tony Sheridan is suffering from the recent death of his wife Marina who fell for no apparent reason from Henna Cliff in Devon. After this tragic, Tony decides to leave Stanacombe and to live with Marina's sister Lucy and her husband Matt Prior. They possess a grandiose and remote mansion called Otherways which was the only house built by a strange Edwardian architect.
Soon Tony, still plagued by the memories of Marina, is strongly attracted to Lucy and at the same time discovers a letter which states that Otherways was the setting of the mysterious murder committed in 1939 known as "the Milner enigma".
Lucy and Tony become lovers, Tony thus betraying his friend Matt and Lucy wrecking her marriage. And as Tony tries to uncover the mystery show more behind Otherways, the list of victims grows longer and longer and disaster can no longer be avoided.
The supernatural element may not appeal to everyone, I didn't especially like it and prefer his "straighter" novels. show less

Good book in first person addressing his late wife. Lots to do with a round house that seems to influence things...
Had me turning the pages well into the night, a gripping and twisting novel right to the end.
Another excellent read by Robert Goddard. A superior story teller who never lets me down!
I am still a fan. This was a compelling story written with his usual pace and style. Great.
