Interesting premise and world with fun characters but utterly let down by terrible jerky pacing. Events lurch from place to place or time without any transition resolution or follow-up and this completely spoils any tension or empathy we have with the heroine. I think it was trying for fast paced, but attempted to achieve this by simply skipping all the intervening life between events that happened weeks or months apart, and this just didn't work.
Raeve has lived all of her remembered life as an adopted orphan, secluded among the human nuns of the Sister on Night. But she's always know she's of elven heritage and looked after by Myra who pulled her from the lake when she was just a child. However it's never been the right time to have show more her questions answered on her parents or anything that was known about her early life. Events take a dramatic turn when the Convent is attacked by elven Hunters apparently seeking her. She flees and with a desperate interlude in a spider filled cave arrives at a human city where she again finds sanctuary in the cloisters before coming to the attention of the Crown, as her magic starts to become more powerful.
There's potential there, but not enough for me to be interested in following the series. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I absolutely adored this book. It's book 1, so be aware that the conclusion leaves you hanging. I was perched on the edge of my couch and unwilling to move until I was done. The protagonist is an elf named Raena who has spent her entire life hiding behind mortals' clothing and pondering who she truly is.
She is forced to flee from everyone and the one person she has been able to rely on while hunters pursue her. She must decide whether to trust the individuals she meets because she has no idea where to go or who to trust. She winds up in the Mortal King's Court, the one place that might test her the most. Can she, however, keep her secret a secret?
I'm hoping for a happily-ever-after ending that sees love and family reunited.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This story has so much potential. I like the characters, they were quirky and the world-building was good. My only downside is: Sometimes it was difficult to define who is speaking to whom and the constant instant travel from place to place was . . . no, felt super chaotic. I give this book 3 stars for loving the plot twists and the potential hiding in its pages.

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. This book had a lot of potential, but could do with a good deal of editing. The premise was very interesting, but I found it hard to follow the different characters and who was talking. Also, some parts seemed to go very fast and some parts were slow and there was a lot of jumping around. I liked the main character, but overall I just found the writing itself a bit of a slog.

I really like this book and would suggest it to everyone.
I can't wait to see where this series goes.
