I liked this book for a variety of reasons. This book asks many questions throughout the story, which creates an interesting interactive aspect for the reader. For example after Mr. Brown makes a sound the author will ask the question, “how about you?” Another highlight of this book is the style of the font. Each sound that Mr. Brown makes is shown by a change in the size, color, and style of font. This use of font helps to capture the reader’s attention and highlight the differences between each sound. The message of this story is to try new things because you never know what you can do until you try. In the text, Mr. Brown attempts to copy a variety of different sounds made by animals, machines, and household items. He did not show more know he was capable of making all of these crazy sounds until he tried. This encourages readers to try new things and explore the world around them. show less
There is something slightly sinister underlying Dr Seuss's choice of material, which is wacky and rollicking but also unsentimental and even cold-eyed in a way that makes me recall his comments on killing Japs. But I haven't quite put my finger on it yet, so now I'll just say I feel about this book neutral to mildly positive (and my synaesthesia finds fascinating but unsettling, like tonguing a scratch on the roof of your mouth, the idea that lightning might go "splat").
Very cute rhyming book about sounds Mr. Brown can make which encourages the child to imitate Mr. Brown. This should be lots of fun for the preschooler!
I enjoyed this book, which followed Mr. Brown as he encounters various animals and reproduces the sounds they make. After each noise, it is reaffirmed to the reader that "Mr. Brown can ____, can you?" which makes the target audience of young children wish to reproduce the sound as well. I really liked how this book forces the reader to interact with it, or if its being read aloud, encourages interaction between the reader and the one being read too. I also liked the rhyming of this book(in typical Dr. Suess fashion) and the fact that this book introduces a number of examples of onomatopoeia. The message of this book is that people should try new things, like making various animal noises that they may or may not have been exposed to show more before.

This book is a quick (rhyming) runthough of the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do, starting with the prosaic (moo, moo, choo choo) to the obscure and absurd (a "goldfish kiss" (pip!) and a "hippopotomus chewing gum" (grum, grum, grum), those are just two examples).

This book is short, which makes it great for early readers and for toddlers learning to talk, as well as for those hurry-through-bedtime days.

It's also really interactive, so it's terrific for group storytimes, especially with more active little kids who don't just want to sit down quietly. Every page ends with the narrator asking if you can make that noise too - and trust me, they can.

I like this book for two big reasons. First, the onomatopoeia words in the book is a great tool to teach vowel sounds, blends and digraphs. For emerging readers, these initial phonics concepts are key to success in future reading. Words like Blurp, Boom, Eek, Slurp, are all funny to read, because the make the sound the say but are easy to sound out. In this book they are writing in crazy font that is big, bold and colorful that grab the readers attention and allowing to really see the blends of letters making the sound and written word. Another reason I like this book is its focus on sight words. These learn to read books are authentic enough to be enjoyed by readers while still reinforcing simple but important vocab. The overall theme show more of the book is that all animals and objects make different sounds. show less
Kids will love this noise-filled Bright and Early Book classic from the one and only Dr. Seuss! Mr. Brown is a sound-making wonder! He can hoo hoo like an owl and buzz buzz like a bee. It is so much fun to make noises that you hear every day, like moo and tick-tock. But stranger sounds are fun to make, too . . . like the pip of a goldfish kiss and the grum grum of a hippo chewing gum. Encouraging imaginative play while learning to read, Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? will keep kids laughing (when they’re not tick-tocking).

Combining brief and funny stories, easy words, catchy rhythm, and lively illustrations, Bright and Early Books are an ideal way to introduce the joys of reading to children.
