I've not read any Graham Greene since reading most of his novels when I was at school, and reading these novellas made me wonder why I'd waited so long before revisiting his books. He writes beautifully, such strong evocations of time and place but in a very accessible and transparent style. Unsurprisingly these are both cinematic (they are both derived from his work in writing for films) and both have a strong moral and emotional core - but with little or no explicit reference to religion.
