It's a fantastic re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty theme in a way that feels very real as opposed to the saccharine, perhaps(?) bowdlerized version by the Brothers Grimm (and based on the Charles Perrault version). There was little sense of a fairytale trope and the characterizations were deftly executed, though the queen persona was confusingly sketchy. Recommended! no reviews | add a review

There's a princess trapped in a tower. This isn't her story. Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? But nothing with fairies is ever simple. Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He's heard there's a curse here that needs breaking, but it's a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold. No library descriptions found. |

This is a very non-linear narrative, but it doesn't feel that way, because it is skilfully woven together from tales told around the fire, and memory, and other ways of slotting information in for the reader. Kingfisher, in the afterword, describes this as sweet, and I think that is as good a word as any, about a very long lived individual protecting a secret, and surviving alone, sacrificing pretty much anything. And then about how that sacrifice comes to an end. ( )
