A young girl and her parents go to a local 'pick it yourself' farm in this simple picture-book for toddlers, and come home with a barrel of apples and the perfect pumpkin. The latter is transformed into a Jack-o-Lantern for Halloween, and the former are given out to trick-or-treaters on the big night...
Originally published in 1989, Apples and Pumpkins is a simple picture-book, with minimal text - a sentence or two per page - and bright, colorful artwork. It felt a little dated to me - my parents would not have allowed me to keep apples, or any other unwrapped item, after trick-or-treating, for fear they might have been tampered with - and was a little simplistic for my taste. That said, I do think it would make an appealing show more autumn/Halloween selection for younger, toddler-aged picture-book audiences. show less

Enjoyed on Open Library. Very simple. Definitely better for the target audience (look at other reviews to see the kiddos' enthusiasm) than for adults looking for something moving, nuanced, or thematic. But fun.
Visit the Comstock farm as a young girl discusses traits of apples and oranges as she and her family prepare for Halloween. The book does a great job of showing how pumpkin and apples are grown. The reader is brought through the story as if they are picking apples and pumpkins themselves.
This is a great fall or Halloween book for very young children. The illustrations are good, and the words are big so that they are able to follow along. This book has details that all children can relate to, whether it be picking apples, going to a pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins, or trick or treating. This will keep young children excited about the season.
This is a book about Halloween. I would not recommend reading this to a class because it is controversial. Many students do not celebrate Halloween and some parents might get upset. Other than that, it has great pictures and short words.
17 months - This book was a huge hit for O. We read this one probably a hundred times over the month we had it. Her verbal language was starting to take off and Apple, Pumpkin and Acorn were three of her favorite words to say and sign at the time. 31 months - found at the thrift store and thought I'd see if O still liked this book, she does! Such a simple. Ok but it still appeals to her.
Planning ahead for my (Special Ed) Pre-K theme, I came across this book. The pictures are in color (good for small children) & not too busy. I will use between my units, my Apple & Pumpkin theme weeks followed each other, That way it will finished out my apple week, & introduced my pumpkin week.
