Description
Winner of the 2018 New Academy Prize in Literature Prizewinning writer Maryse Condé reimagines Emily Brontë's passionate novel as a tale of obsessive love between the "African" Razyé and Cathy, the mulatto daughter of the man who takes Razyé in and raises him, but whose treatment goads him into rebellious flight. Retaining the emotional power of the original, Condé shows the Caribbean society in the wake of emancipation.Tags

Very educational, on a historical and geographical basis - I've never really read or even thought about Guadeloupe before - but the retelling of Wuthering Heights fell flat for me. The story tries to do for Emily's novel what Wide Sargasso Sea did for Jane Eyre but that didn't really work either. Even though every single character, whether cast or chorus, gets a chapter told from their own point of view, none of them really came to life. Oh except the Linton character, Justin-Marie - I will hate that whiny little bitch in any incarnation. And the narrative is far too obvious in places; readers are still debating the ethnicity of Heathcliff in the original novel (mainly thanks to Hollywood whitewashing), but here we get punched in the show more face with: 'It's people who made him what he is, a girl he loved who rejected him because he was too black and didn't have a cent to his name, preferring a rich white Creole.'
More entertaining than the Wikipedia article on Guadeloupe, but not a patch on the source material. show less

This is a reimagining of Bronte's Wuthering Heights set on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. The Caribbean setting was wonderfully evoked, and Cathy and Rayze' (Heathcliff) were also wonderfully real. This version goes well beyond Bronte's issues of wealth and class, and also considers race and slavery as important factors in the story. I found this to be a complex and involving read.
