A bold knight and his more intellectually curious squire arrive in Bridgetown, which no longer has a bridge. Sir Kelton rushes off to battle the dragon, but the squire does some research and finds that all is not as it seems.
A Halloween-esque palette of black, orange, yellow, gray, and brown, excellent use of light and shadow, and a variety of layouts throughout (from single page illustrations to six panels per page) set a slightly spooky mood and a perfect pace; there are six chapters plus an epilogue.
Funny, clever, perfect for fans of dragon stories with a twist.

This was a super cute short fantasy story. The squire saves the day by thinking things through without jumping to conclusions. I loved the dragon in this. He felt very dragon-y, not too evil but not too good either, just the right amount of dragon. I just felt like the way the squire solved the mystery was a bit of a stretch. It made sense, but I'm not sure there were enough clues to really figure it out... The story was also quite short and at the end he bargains with the dragon to get some of his gold which makes sense but... It isn't actually the dragon's gold, it was the wizards and the dragon is basically a squatter. I get that the dragon could probably just eat them all so the balance of power when bargaining is... low, but for show more the record that dragon is not entitled to ANY of that gold. It should really all belong to the townspeople. I appreciate the bartering, but two bags of gold borrowed WITH interest from the dragon just seems unfair. show less
A clever little story about a competent, intelligent squire and the blowhard knight he serves coming to a town vexed by a dragon. While the knight jumps in sword a-swinging, the squire tries to take in the bigger picture.
I've enjoyed Chantler's other books, and I'm glad to see that this might be the first in a new series. I'd be happy for a return visit with this duo.

Gr 3–5—When a bold-but-brainless knight and a slight-but-smart squire arrive in Bridgetown, they find it’s missing its
bridge. While the knight rushes off to find and fight a dragon, the squire (the true hero) pursues the problem from
another direction. Chantler’s palette of Halloween neutrals sets the perfect mood for this clever story in which
moments of tension and danger are balanced by humor.

Very cute and highly entertaining. I love the art, the very diverse cast of townspeople (especially the 3 eyed, 4 armed archivist and the snarky dragon). Good fun!
I liked this! Some medieval fantasy with a dash of mystery and a DRAGON. I’d read another book in this series.

I really enjoyed this story! What starts as a classic medieval adventure quickly turns into a fun story about teamwork, finding your own strengths, and friendships. The humor and wholesomeness made this story for me, constantly making me smile and wondering what characters would say next. One thing that really stood out to me was the unique artwork; the color palette of oranges, grays, black, and white gives the book a distinct look that fits the story perfectly!
