"What is life? How did it start? Long, long ago, no one knows exactly where or when, a tiny bubble formed that was a Little Bit Different. It was the first living cell. Everyone's ancestor. And so the story of life begins."--

Once again, Idan Ben-Barak (Do Not Lick This Book; There's A Skeleton Inside You) breaks down a huge concept in a manageable way. This time, it's the evolution of all life forms. And what is life? "Life is the way that some things make more things that are a lot like themselves but sometimes a little bit different." And how did it start? We don't know exactly where or how, but we know there were elements, which joined together to form molecules, which "flowed together to form small bubbles," until one day "a very clever little bubble" figured out how to take more molecules and make a copy of itself, "and each was a little bit different." After a while (asterisk: "literally billions of years"), there were many kinds of things, each a Little Bit Different, culminating in a glorious portrait double gatefold of "all of us," with the bubble at the bottom and large mammals at the top. (This HAS to be a poster!) There is no back matter, but that lack doesn't detract from this beautiful, informative book. ( )

thought-provoking, scientifically precise, and accessible explanation of the origins of life and evolution across Earth’s history for a young audience. Ideas about life, time, and heredity are conveyed through friendly illustrations and simple sentences (albeit with some sophisticated vocabulary)....look closely at the details in the finely crafted illustrations,...clever subtleties that invite further contemplation about what makes “all of us.”
