Happy #pridemonth, y’all!

I’m kicking off my month of #pride reading with this perfect gem of a book, I Am A Rainbow! by the delightful and talented @mkik808, and illustrated by @richarddraws, from @littlebrownyoungreaders.

When young Mark is worried about being made fun of at school because he’s “different”, his family makes him a rainbow cape to help him shine and to bolster his confidence. Later, Mark discovers a group of friends who are all just like him, queer and full of positivity and love. However, when Mark loses his rainbow cape, it’s his new found friends and his family who help him realize that the rainbow is inside of him and he can sparkle and shine all on his own!

A wonderful story about accepting yourself and finding your tribe, both things that are so important for young, queer people to understand, Kanemura’s book is an absolute delight. Richard Merritt’s expressive illustrations convey the vibrant queer joy that we can find in our every day lives.

With the state of the world, and especially this country, right now, young queer kids need these type of books; they need to see that while things are scary right now, your family, whether biological, found, or both, can help you find your place in the world, and give you the space you need to feel safe and to shine! This is a perfect book to kick off Pride month, for any age!
