This is yet another story in parallel with the television series about the two rabbits, Max and Ruby, which my 3 year old made me (and everyone else in the house) read over and over again.

Max's blue dungarees are looking very disreputable, and their mother has given his older sister Ruby $5, which is exactly enough to buy him another pair in the sales. But Max, of few words, desperately wants a dragon shirt ... What will happen when Ruby takes him into the crowded department store?

My little one loves the book and the television series, and I believe we have seen this episode. These books tell light stories that are fun, and funny. Four stars.
Max's old blue pants are getting quite worn out, but Max doesn't mind. In fact, he likes them that way. But his mother decides it's time for him to get new pants and puts his sister, Ruby, in charge of bring him to the store to buy them. Max would rather use the five dollars their mother gave them to buy a dragon shirt instead. In the hustle and bustle of the shopping center, Max and Ruby get separated and Max happens to find a perfect dragon shirt. By the time Ruby finds Max, he has managed to drip ice cream all over the shirt. Luckily, it was only five dollars. This is an enjoyable picture book for young children, one of several in the Max and Ruby series by Rosemary Wells. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and full of details show more that add to the story. I think students would love reading this book out loud, and giggle at Max's clever way of getting his dragon shirt after all. This book could also be used for discussion about not wondering away from your parents or the people you are with when in a crowded place. It could also be used to introduce a lesson on money, seeing as how the detail that they have just five dollars is pointed out several times. show less
This is a cute little book from the Max and Ruby series. Ruby is supposed to take Max to the mall to get new pants but when they get there she starts looking around and the girls' clothes. Max eventually gets bored and starts to look around the store himself while Ruby is in the dressing room trying on clothes. He gets lost but finds a dragon shirt that he really wants. Ruby only has enough money to get the pants, not the pants and a shirt. Once Ruby finds Max gone she goes around and looks for him and finds him with one of the workers in the store. Max was wearing the dragon shirt and the person he was with bought him ice cream. Max, being a little kid of course, had ice cream all over the new shirt forcing Ruby to buy the shirt show more instead of the pants they had come for.

This is a pretty cute little book. Max and Ruby always makes me smile but I always wonder where are their parents?! You see the grandmother and the friends and the neighbors but never the parents!

I think this book would be appropriate for children ages 6 and down. Older children would probably not find it very exciting but it would be very useful to use if you wanted to talk about what to do when you get lost or separated from whoever you are supposed to be with. It would also be useful if you wanted to talk about money. Max and Ruby only had enough money to buy the shirt or the pants, not both.

Max's sister Ruby takes him to buy new pants with five dollars that her mother gave her. All Max wants is a dragon shirt, but Ruby keeps telling him they don't have enough money for anything else. She tries on a lot of dresses herself, and when she goes to look for another one Max is gone from the dressing room. She panics and runs around the mall looking for him. When she finds him, he is eating ice cream that's all over his brand new dragon shirt!
Max is getting too big for his clothes. Ruby takes him to the store to buy new clothes. She decides to try on dresses and max becomes bored. He wonders into another store and wants a dragon shirt. When ruby finally finds him he has gotten ice cream all over the shirt and now she has to buy the shirt and has no money for new pants.
Great read aloud for first graders in teaching the importance of why it is so important to communicate with one another especially in a public area.
This was a cute book. It was about Max getting lost in the mall and Ruby having to find him. This would be a good book for younger students to read.
