In this third entry in a so-far five-star series, private detective Leo Waterman investigates two cases: a librarian gone missing at the same time that $193,612 also go missing and a homeless drunk who claims to be the mother of a recently deceased music phenom. I was really happy to see Waterman’s gang of drunks and destitutes back to assist him in the capture of a criminal, but the novel just wasn’t as good as previous novels. Too many deus ex machinas, improbabilities and convoluted subplots for my taste. I’m not sorry I read it, but it’s not up to G.M. Ford’s usual high standard.
(written in 1997) Leo Waterman is back and he's hot. A homeless woman he befriends turns out to be the soon disinherited mother of a recently dead rock star (this, as all Leo's, takes place in Seattle). And his friend the lawyer needs help finding a librarian who's apparently skimmed $250,000 from the library and skipped. One really fun part of this is that Leo is now on-line. The Dorothy-L mailing list (for mystery buffs) figures into this story and Leo's own ISP is the same as mine (at the time) - Eskimo.Com!!! All the Leo Waterman's are just great and this is no different. Funny, clever, excellent stories. I have it on good authority that the next one is done and the one after that is nearly done. Yahoo!
Fun to read again after a long absence. Ford's writing is fun, witty and has great story lines. I love this dialog between our Hero Leo Waterman and a stuffy Library supervisor...could be anyone supervisor. Plus murder and the return of 'the boys'...'Donna Franchini ws waiting outshide theelevator as the door slid open. As promised, she was holding a manila file folder. She was a tall woman, nearly my height, in a crisp white blouse and ankle-lenth denim jumper and a pair of sturdy black shoes the size of cinder blocks. She was impatiently tapping her right foot. Her long gray hair was twisted on top of her head in some sort of tight braid. As she looked me over throught a pari of oval glasses, her expression suggested acurte show more gastrointestinal distress. Without either fanfare or introduction, she said, 'follow me, ' turned on her rubber heel, and started down the long hall. I stood still. show less
