"
...I love him, and I respect him, and I need him. We all do." —from the foreword, written and read by Jamie Lee Curtis
If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad's fast-food joint that one day he'd be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he'd be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might've asked, "You want fries with that?"
John burst onto the scene in General Hospital, propelling him into the teen idol stratosphere, a place that's often a point of no return. But Stamos beat the odds and over the past four decades has proved himself to be one of his generation's most successful and beloved actors. Whether showing off his comedic chops on Full House or his dramatic skills on ER, pushing the boundaries on Broadway or living out his youthful dreams as an honorary Beach Boy, John has surprised everyone, most of all himself.
A universal story about friendship, love, loss, and the courage to embrace love once more, John Stamos's memoir is filled with some of the most memorable names in Hollywood, both old and new. Funny, deeply poignant, and brutally honest, If You Would Have Told Me is a portrait of a boy who went from believing in Disney magic to a man who learns that we have to create our own magical moments in life.
A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company.

If You Would Have Told Me

I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: H C Public Library
Dates Read: 12/18/23 - 12/20/23
Stars: 4
Narrator(s): John Stamos

The Story:

This is John telling his story from A - Z. He speaks of his time on several shows, Broadway and his family life. There were some rough times but you can hear in his voice now how he is absolutely in love with his wife, child and life. You can also tell how much he loves his mother, father and other immediate family members. I enjoyed his stories about celebrities I had no idea he had close relationships with, this is the one of the best parts about memoirs. The story is not told linearly so it can be confusing as to where you are at times but that wasn’t a huge problem.

John Stamos’s memoir, If You Would Have Told Me drags and does not present any interesting tidbits. His world revolves around alcohol, drugs, and women. Then a small miracle arrives in the form of his current wife, Caitlin McHugh, and the birth of their son. Of course John, honors his mother throughout the story as the guiding light of his life. This book wasted my time. ( )

I typically enjoy celebrity memoirs and this was no exception. John Stamos has so much heart and really so much of this book is a tribute to his parents, his family and his upbringing. I loved learning how he got involved with the Beach Boys and how he almost tried to get out of being America's beloved 'Uncle Jesse'. The stories about him and his cast mates from Full House becoming their own kind of family were so sweet.

I also recently got to meet him at a book event and he was just as warm and charming in real life. If you're an 80s/90s kid especially, you'll want to pick this one up! ( )
