The Orphan of China is a play written by the French Enlightenment philosopher and author, Voltaire, in 1756. The play is set in ancient China and tells the story of a young orphan named Zamti who is taken in by a wealthy family. Zamti falls in love with the daughter of the family, Amnade, but their love is forbidden due to their different social statuses. As the play unfolds, Zamti discovers that he is actually the son of the Emperor of China and was taken from his family as a baby. He is then faced with the difficult decision of whether to claim his rightful place as the Emperor or to continue living as a commoner with Amnade. The play explores themes of love, loyalty, social class, and the corrupting influence of power. It is considered a tragedy due to the tragic ending and the moral lesson that power can corrupt even the best-intentioned individuals. Voltaire wrote The Orphan of China as a commentary on the political and social climate of his time, using the setting of ancient China to criticize the abuses of power and the rigid social hierarchy of 18th-century Europe. The play was well-received and remains a classic of French literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
