Description
While the Petersons are away, their house decides to take a trip to the sea to watch the "Dance of the Sunlight," despite some groaning from the chimney and the basement's refusal to rise to the occasion.Tags

"When the Petersons left for vacation, their house decided to go on holiday, too." Each part of the house weighs in on the destination, and ultimately, it's the sunporch's suggestion to see the sea that wins out. "I'll lead the way!" shouts the front door.
Observant readers will notice when the house and the family cross paths, but of course the house makes it home in time...albeit with an octopus in the flowerbox.

This wasn't my favorite Davies story, but it was a creative precept. The idea of a house that goes on its own adventure when the family leaves is fun and interesting. I just wish that it had been a bit more developed.
Summary:
When a family decides to take a vacation, the house decides it should as well. Once all the certain areas of the house are done deciding where they should go, they embark on their adventure to the beach to see the sunrise. The house decides that it only lives once, so it surfs the waves before returning back home. The family comes back home to see the house soaking wet to wonder what happened.
Personal Reaction:
I love this book. It is so comical and cute, that I think ANY person would find joy reading it. The little words that the house says that actually describes that part of the house is just the topping on the cake of cute!
Class Extension Ideas:
1. The students could write a small paragraph about their own family vacations show more they've taken if any.
2. Students can create a house foldable, which allows certain parts of the house, like Windows, doors, etc, to have flaps that open and write quirky little messages behind the flaps. show less

K-4. Funny story about a house that goes on vacation. All of the elements of the house are personified and have diverse personalities.
