Indian Art

Description
This engaging book tells the story clearly and vividly from the first, still mysterious, beginnings in the Indus valley, through the great masterpieces of Buddhist and Hindu art to the coming of Islam, the eclectic culture of the Mughal court, and the golden age of miniature painting. Much of Indian art is immediately accessible to the outsider, but much is also enigmatic, needing interpretation and guidance before it can be enjoyed in depth: the strange pantheon of the Hindu gods, the show more subtle insights of Buddhist mysticism, or the complex symbolism of the miniatures. For this edition, the late Professor Craven thoroughly revised the text and incorporated works by contemporary artists, linking their achievements to the traditions of Indian art. A new glossary and time line are also included. show lessTags

A little gem of a book, which covers all facets of India's ancient art and architecture, sculpture, and painting, from the cave paintings of central India, to the Harappan civilization, the successive Buddhist and Hindu dynasties, down to the Mughals. The earlier centuries are dealt with in great detail, witness the fact that it is not till well into half way in the book that the rock-cut and granite block temples of Pallava Mamallapuram are dealt with. The first half, therefore, dwells more on the treasures of sculpture than architecture. The medieval Hindu and Muslim/Mughal eras are presented in less detail, but the last major chapter, on painting, is a lovely bonus.
If the reader is looking for more emphasis on structures, then this show more book may be complemented by Henry Stearlin's volumes (published by Taschen) on Hindu India, or by Maurizio Taddei's volume on India in the Monuments of Civilization series by Cassel (which also ends on the threshold of the Muslim onslaught). show less
