Binary: Debunking the Sex Spectrum Myth

by Zachary A Elliott

Description

"Binary is the ultimate guide for understanding and dismantling the sex spectrum, the new cultural belief that sex exists on a continuum and that male and female are social constructs. By analyzing its ten most popular arguments, Zachary Elliott reveals how the tenets of the sex spectrum deny evolution, development, and genetics. Using the primary biology literature, the book provides the reader with a comprehensive scientific understanding of how the two sexes are universal phenomena and show more how complex genetic networks consistently result in a simple yet profound outcome: male or female." -- Page [4] of cover. show less

This book has a nice simple structure. The introduction asserts that there is a new pseudo-science called the "sex spectrum"; that this pseudoscience has been supported by generally or at least formerly respected institutions including "Scientific American"; and that the purpose of the book is to explain both the true science of sex and the tactics that proponents of this "sex spectrum" pseudo-science use to advance their claims. The next part, titled "Overview" explains the science of sex in humans at a fairly high-level and then gives an outline of the tactics used by the "sex spectrum" advocates. Expect to have to learn some new vocabulary when reading this section. Then there are ten chapters, titled "Arguments" which are case show more studies of the various arguments for the "sex spectrum" taken from social media, science magazines, and some kind of science journals.

I was glad that in the essay debunking the Scientific American article "Visualizing Sex as a Spectrum", Elliott points out that the spectrum metaphor is sadly abused as well as wholly misleading. The author of the article could not even properly use the spectrum metaphor to lie, because in a spectrum of, e.g., light, there is a measurable quantity that determines where that particular light belongs on the spectrum. The author fails to come up with any measure and the whole spectrum metaphor collapses. I've read really good books put out by Scientific American press in the 1980s, the organization has deteriorated beyond recognition since then.

The book winds down with a conclusion that reiterates some biology basics. It has a promising bibliography and a helpful glossary of at least ten pages.

The new pseudoscience of sex has become dominant, from social media to science magazines and peer-reviewed journals.

Quotations
If we wish to dismantle the false claims of the sex spectrum myth and slow its advance into our institutions, we must reject the lies that the male and female sexes are unreliable categories and that one's sense of self deter... (show all)mines sex. We must refuse to participate in the spectrum belief system and stop supporting institutions who promulgate its lies.

(Conclusion)
The integration of basic biological principles with advanced insights provides us with a holistic picture for the biology of sex and sex differences. Sex spectrum pseudoscience cannot do any of this. It lack predictive and ex... (show all)planatory power, basic scientific standards, and ultimately, truth.

(Conclusion)
What sex spectrum pseudoscientists call "advanced biology" is, in reality, the misuse and misinterpretation of biological knowledge for the goal of redefining sex.

Last words
(Click to show. Warning: May contain spoilers.)No matter who tries to deny the ancient reality of the sexes, we will always need words to describe the sex that produces the sperm and the sex that produces the egg, with all the profound differences that come from this fundamental distinction --- the binary system of two.
