David K. Shonkwiler kötete az 1956-os magyar forradalom okait, eseményeit és nemzetközi következményeit összegzi. Bár a mű kifejezetten oktatási céllal íródott, tárgyilagosan mutatja be a sztálinista elnyomás és a szovjet beavatkozás történelmi tényeit, mentesítve a narratívát a revizionista torzításoktól. A tartalom értéke a korszak alapvető, tényszerű összefoglalásában rejlik, amely tiszta racionalitással közelíti meg a hidegháborús szembenállás egyik legkritikusabb pontját.
