Description
"A hallucinatory literary horror novel set deeply in the consciousness of a woman exploring a changed and frightening world. Our protagonist wakes up in a basement, tied to a chair, with a man looming over her. But someone has a knife. We follow her as she emerges from captivity into an unnamed, nightmarish city, seeking some meaning to her new reality. As figures emerge from the night, some offer sanctuary, and others judgement, but she keeps moving, making her way through this fever dream show more of a narrative. SUPPLICATION is a haunting, embodied tale of displacement, fear, and the quest for respite."-- show lessTags

Fittingly, Supplication is not a book that one reads for plot – in fact it’s quite difficult to remember exactly what happened, or in which order. The strength of the book lies in its emulation of pain as a mood or feeling – of being inside a suffering mind. A certain rhythmic nature emerges in the novel’s imagery and pacing – a moment will fill with an abundance of descriptive show more energy, of thoughts that repeat and loop and are so full of imagery that they might burst or break, and then they do; there is a release (often in the form of death, burning, vomit, or blood) and an emptier moment follows, a brief respite, before the writing starts to fill up once again. The pattern repeats. show less
