This book takes the tale of the Three Little Pigs and adds a twist to demonstrate the concepts of permutations and combinations. In this story, there is a wolf who is looking for a pig to feed his wife; however, he is not sure which house contains the pig. He consults the local wise animal of the town to try to determine in which house the pig is staying. What the wolf discovers is there are numerous possibilities given there are 3 pigs and several houses. This book shows how to use permutations and combinations, which can be a little difficult for students to understand. This is a story to use to open the lesson and throughout the lesson as the students begin to understand the concepts more.
FROM BACK OF BOOK:
Award-winning artist Mitsumasa Anno has collaborated with mathematical expert Tuyosi Mori to produce this intriguing picture book. Through simple story and colourful illustrations, Anno's Three Litte Pigs combines fun and learning to bring an advanced mathematical concept -- that of combinatorial anlaysis, which forms the basis of much of today's computer 'thinking' and problem-solving -- within the reach of even young children.
