You’d have to be living under a rock to not have heard of the keto diet or veganism. While I generally know what each lifestyle implies, I don’t have knowledge beyond that, and am open to educating myself and quite possibly adopting these diets if I can make a better-informed decision. That was my hope with the Vegan Keto Cookbook. I had hoped to not only educate myself, but also get a solid meal plan, leaving no room for error, so that I could possible give the vegan keto diet a shot.
Sadly, I closed this book feeling pretty overwhelmed and frozen in my fear of adopting eating patterns that are completely foreign to me. The book starts out with brief explanations of both aspects of the vegan keto diet, which is a great way to make show more sure the author and the reader are on the same page, but that’s where I began to get lost.
I appreciated the list of approved foods on the vegan keto diet, but I do wish the lesser-known foods on this list could’ve been better explained. Some of these I’ve never heard of before and would like some guidance as to where to find these items in the grocery store or even why they’re so important for these diets. I also would’ve liked to have seen more tips and tricks as far as meal prepping and cooking. I get that many aren’t so much of a newbie like me but since these recipes seem pretty easy, I am assuming they are geared more towards people like me and would’ve liked that extra knowledge to help me better decide if this is a diet I wish to adopt.
As far as the recipes themselves, I wasn’t that impressed overall. I did save a few of them to try later but without knowing a lot of these ingredients I am scared to try many of these recipes out. I like how each day focuses on one ingredient and gives a full day of meals that include that ingredient. I also appreciated the beautiful photography that was throughout this cookbook. I might not know every ingredient, but I can appreciate a delicious photo.
If you’re already a vegan I could see these recipes being a nice addition to your meal plan, but if you’re a newbie like me you could be as lost as I am. I’m not giving up on my knowledge of the vegan keto diet and could see coming back to this cookbook at a later date if I do decide to adopt this lifestyle. show less

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.I have previously followed a keto diet successfully, so I did not need to shift my nutritional paradigms to make use of this book.
Before the book gets to the recipes, there is some discussion of:
- weight loss by achieving ketosis
- the ethics of being vegan
- a list of staples suitable for keto
- a list of unsuitable staples
I found the staples listed to be educational adding some staples I hadn't been aware of.
A book of keto recipes needs to have nutritional info, and they do. I was surprised at how high in carbs many of the recipes were. For example a recipe had
19 g. fat
12 g protein
33 g carbs
11 g fiber
That's a lot more net carbs than I want to have. It seemed to me that half the recipes are excessive in carbs. Some seem to be lowin show more carbs and otherwise on target nutritionally.
The recipes are easy to follow without excessive steps.
I plan to try those recipes that are not too highin carbs and avoid the others. show less
