Apart from a few good scenes, I found this predictable, repetitive, and unbelievable.
This author has a trait for repetition, so I was ready for that, but it was no less annoying because of it. The reader is forced to endure the same conversations between Kate and Rollo again and again.
Victoria Holt also repeats themes from book to book, so I know, for example, if the heroine constantly hammers on about a man she hates, it means she loves – or will love – him. I thought this may be an exception, though, after what Rollo subjects her to. I can’t believe any woman would take that from a man and forgive him, let alone talk to him on a friendly basis, and certainly never develop feelings for him.
The other storyline – the murders – show more was predictable early on. It was supposed to be a twist at the end of the book, but it didn’t surprise me in the least. It was all blatantly obvious. show less

Victoria Holt's books are predictable, lightweight, chicklit, silly romances...but somehow I keep reading them. This is my favourite.
Probably my favorite Victoria Holt book!!! The emotions involved and the ending are just amazing!!
Lovely book but it's out of print. I like artist characters and this has the added interest of being about miniature portrait painting.
